Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy is for Everybody... and Every BODY!
Pelvic floor PT is often associated with women's or perinatal health, but did you know it can be just as beneficial for men, non-binary, and trans folks? These populations can experience a wide range of pelvic floor conditions, and PT can help address many of these issues.
One common condition that can affect all genders is pelvic pain. Pelvic pain can be caused by a variety of factors, such as muscle tension, nerve irritation, or inflammation. We can help by addressing the underlying cause of the pain, whether it be muscular or neurological in nature. Treatment may include manual therapy techniques such as trigger point release or stretching, as well as exercises to strengthen or relax specific muscles in the pelvic region.
Another common condition we see across genders is urinary incontinence. Urinary incontinence is the involuntary leakage of urine and can be caused by weak or dysfunctional pelvic floor muscles. We can help strengthen these muscles, improve bladder control, and reduce the frequency and severity of urinary leakage.
For trans folks, pelvic floor PT can also be an important part of gender-affirming care. It's common to experience pelvic floor muscle tension or pain after undergoing gender-affirming surgeries such as vaginoplasty, phalloplasty, or metoidioplasty. We can help with recovery from these surgeries and also help address any issues with urinary incontinence or pelvic pain that may arise.
In addition to these conditions, pelvic floor physical therapy can also be beneficial for people with constipation, sexual dysfunction, and other pelvic floor disorders. Everyone has a pelvis and everyone deserves freedom from pain and dysfunction!
